Listed below are the most recent scholarships that are available in the Career Center located in the School Media Center.  Students and parents are welcome and encouraged to visit the Scholarship Center as often as possible.  The scholarships are listed in chronological order, starting with the earliest application deadline.  If you have questions regarding any scholarship, award, or deadline, please contact Mrs. Turner.

2013 MINNESOTA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES HIGH SCHOOL PAGE PROGRAM

Award:
Students have the opportunity to learn about our state government system and how it operates.  Students will participate in scheduled program activities from 8:30AM to 5:00PM Monday through Thursday, and from 8:30AM to 12:30PM on Friday.   Program participants are responsible for all costs incurred during their week at the Capitol, however, each student receives a small stipend to help defray the costs.  This stipend is designed to help cover the student's food expenses, and usually covers the cost of lodging.

Qualifications:
Students must be a JUNIOR student in high school.  Students can apply online at http://www.house.leg.state.mn.us/edprog/app.pdf

Deadline:
Applications must be postmarked or emailed no later than October 31, 2012.

NESTLE VERY BEST IN YOUTH

Award:
Winners of the Nestle Very Best In Youth award receive lots of fabulous prizes including $1,000 to donate to their favorite charity; an all-expense paid trip for them and a parent to attend the amazing awards ceremony in Los Angeles, California in the summer of 2013; and will be featured in the Nestle Very Best In Youth 2013 publication.

AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP
THE NORTHWEST AIRLINES PILOTS' WIVES CLUB

Award: 
One $1,800 scholarship will be awarded

Qualifications:
Graduating high school seniors, college freshman, college sophomores, and college juniors with an interest in the health science area are eligible.  Applicants must also be Minnesota residents and attend a Minnesota high school or college.

Only electronic applications will be accepted.  Students must visit www.heart.org/mnscholarships to download an application form.

Students must submit the application and all supporting documents via e-mail to mnscholarships@heart.org. 

Deadline:
All applications must be received no later than November 16, 2012.  If you need supporting documents, please see Mrs. Turner no later than November 12, 2012.

UNIVERSITY OF ST. THOMAS SCIENCE, MATHEMATICS AND ENGINEERING SCHOLARSHIPS

Award:
The University of St. Thomas offers two full-tuition and two $8,000 renewable scholarships to students who plan to major in science, math or engineering

Qualifications:
Applicants must be U.S. citizens, permanent residents or eligible non-citizens.  Applicants must be high school seniors during the 2012-2013 school year, and applicants must submit by November 30, 2012 a complete application for undergraduate admission to St. Thomas.  Applicants must have a composite ACT greater or equal to 28 or an SAT score greater or equal to 1260.  Students can go the the St. Thomas scholarship website at:

Deadline:
Completed scholarship applications must be postmarked by November 30, 2012.  If you would like Mrs. Turner to mail the application, you must submit the application to her no later than November 28, 2012.

PRUDENTIAL GEORGIA REALTY'S AMERICAN DREAM SCHOLARSHIP ESSAY CONTEST

Award:
$1,000

Qualifications:
Open to U.S. residents.  No purchase necessary.  All participants must be enrolled as a full-time high school junior or senior.  Entries are limited to one submission per person.  Immediate family members of Prudential Georgia Realty employees are excluded from this contest. 

How to enter: To apply, students must submit an essay based on one (1) of the three (3) essay questions about their personal experience with homeownership.

  • The essay should be between 500-1000 words.
  • Send a Word doc attachment to scholarship@prudentialgeorgia.com with your essay submission
  • The file name should be your full name, state, and date of birth.  For example, Chipper-Jones-GA-4-24-1972
  • All submission emails must contain the student’s full name, date of birth, email address, postal address, high school they are currently enrolled in, and a phone number to contact.

How to win: PRUDENTIAL GEORGIA REALTY will select two winners based on the best essay as determined by our internal panel of judges. Selection criteria will include, but is not limited to:

  • Compelling and engaging essay that describes the impact of home ownership on the personal life of the student.
  • Thematic consistency throughout the submission around the central thesis.
  • Proper spelling and grammar usage throughout the submission

Deadline:
All essay submissions must be received by 11:59PM EST on 11/30/2012.

P.L.A.Y. SCHOLARSHIP

The contest: Beginning 09/10/2012 P.L.A.Y. will promote, by means of internet and print, the opportunity to submit entries to win a scholarship valued at $1000.00.

To Qualify:  The contest is open to U.S. residents. No purchase necessary. All participants must be enrolled as full-time high school juniors or seniors. Entries are limited to one submission per person. Immediate family members of P.L.A.Y. employees are excluded from this contest. All essay submissions must be received by 11:59pm EST on Friday, November 30, 2012.

How to enter: To apply, students will submit an essay with 2-3 photos of their volunteer efforts to help animals in need and how that involvement has changed their lives or shaped their perceptions on the importance of animal welfare.

  • The essay should be between 500-1000 words.
  • Send a Word doc attachment to scholarship@petplay.com with your essay submission
  • The file name should be your full name, state, and date of birth.  For example, Chipper-Jones-GA-4-24-1972

The Brainerd Elks Lodge #615 will supplement the national scholarships with the awarding of separate scholarships at the local level for students in the schools surrounding the Brainerd area.  The following scholarships will be awarded at the local level:

Most Valuable Student (Young Man)       1st Place- $800
Most Valuable Student (Young Woman)  1st Place-$800

Qualifications:
This contest is open to any student who wishes to apply, students with scholastic achievement of 90% or better would meet the criteria established by the National Foundation.  The essay is extremely important.  A haphazard presentation will only hinder the applicant's chance of winning.

UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS

Award:

Qualifications:
Must apply at the University of Minnesota by December 15, 2012.  Students can apply online at www.d.umn.edu/admissions.  Music majors must  also apply to the Department of Music at www.d.umn.edu/music/prospective_students/app_procedures.html.

RONALD REAGAN PRESIDENTIAL FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP

Award:
$10,000 scholarship renewable for up to four years

Qualifications:

MINNESOTA POWER'S COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP

Award:

Qualifications:
Applicants residing in Minnesota Power's service territory will be considered and can apply online at www.mnpower.com/scholarships

Deadline:
Students must apply online by January 15, 2013.  Students can go to www.mnpower.com/scholarships to apply online.

MARSHALL H. AND NELLIE ALWORTH MEMORIAL FUND

Award:
Students awarded a scholarship in 2013 will be eligible to receive up to $20,000 to be distributed ($5,000 per year) over four years provided they meet the following criteria:  maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.85 as a freshman and a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 for  subsequent years and continue to major in an approved mathematics or science field of study.

Qualifications:
Must be a graduating senior from a high school in one of the following Minnesota counties:  Aitkin, Beltrami, Carlton, Cass, Cook, Crow Wing, Lake, Itasca, Koochiching, and St. Louis, have a composite ACT score of 26 or higher on the American College Test (ACT), be graduating in the top 20% of their class, if not the top 20% but has an ACT score of 28 or higher, student may still apply.  Student must have shown promise for a career in mathematics and in the sciences, commit to major in one of the designated fields of study, have demonstrated qualities of character, perseverance and ambition, have a high scholastic standing among their peers, and be from a family whose taxable income is less than $120,000.

AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY
DEPARTMENT OF MN SCHOLARSHIP

Award:
$1,000.00

Qualifications:
Must be a resident of the State of MN or a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, The American Legion or SAL, Department of MN, a high school senior or graduate, with a good scholastic record and average of at least a "C", in need of, and deserving of financial assistance, of good character, with ambition to continue his/her education.

Deadline:
Applications must be submitted to the Unit President by March 5 and forwarded by the Unit President to the Department Headquarters, American Legion Auxiliary, State Veterans Service Building.

All documentation must be submitted to her no later than March 5.  If you would like Mrs. Turner to mail your completed materials to Arlyiss, you must submit your application to Mrs. Turner no later than March 1, 2013.

AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY DEPARTMENT OF MINNESOTA PAST PRESIDENT PARLEY HEALTH CARE SCHOLARSHIP

Award:
$1,000.00

Qualifications:
The Past President Parley Health Care Scholarship has been established to assist needy and deserving students or adults to commence or further their education in any phase of the health care field such as the entire medical, nursing and dental support fields such as registered nurses, nursing assistant, licensed practical nurse, X-ray or other technician, physical or other therapist, dental hygienist or dental assistant, etc.

Applicants must be a member of an American Legion Auxiliary Unit in the Department of Minnesota, for a minimum of three (3) years; and maintain a "C" or better average in school if a student.  The scholarship must be used for the purpose of continuing education, beyond high school, in a vocational or post secondary educational facility. 

DEADLINE:
Applications must be received in the Department Office of the American Legion Auxiliary by March 15.  If you would like Mrs. Turner to mail your completed application, you must submit your materials to Mrs. Turner by March 13, 2013.

AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY CHILDREN OF WARRIORS NATIONAL PRESIDENTS' SCHOLARSHIP

Award:
$3,500, $3,000, $2,500

Qualifications:
Candidates for this award shall be daughters, stepdaughters, sons, stepsons, grandsons, step-grandsons, granddaughters, step-granddaughters, great-granddaughters, step-great-granddaughters, great-grandsons, step-great-grandsons of veterans who served in the Armed Forces during eligibility dates for membership in the American Legion (WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Grenada and Lebanon, Panama, Persian Gulf to present).

Applicants must be in their senior year of high school.  Previous national Presidents' Scholarship recipients are not eligible for further consideration. 

Deadline:
Applicants must present the completed application to the local American Legion Auxiliary Unit President on or before March 1, 2013.

AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY SPIRIT OF YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP FOR JUNIOR MEMBERS

Award:
One four-year scholarship will be awarded in each division of the American Legion Auxiliary. 

Qualifications:
Candidates for this award shall be/shall have been Junior members of the American Legion Auxiliary; said member to have held Junior membership in the American Legion Auxiliary for the past three years and must hold a membership card for the current (2013) year.  Applicant must continue her membership in the American Legion Auxiliary during the four-year scholarship period.

Applicant must be in their senior year of an accredited high school.  Applicants must be of good character and have grades which meet entrance requirements at the institution of their choice.  Applicant must have at least a 3.0 GPA using a 4.0 base.

Deadline:
Applicant must present the completed application packet to the Unit President on or before March 1, 2013.  If you would like Mrs. Turner to mail your application to Arlyiss please make sure you give your application to Mrs. Turner no later than February 27, 2013.

BIG SUN SCHOLARSHIP

Award:
$500.00

Qualifications:
The BigSun Scholarship is proud to be ablet o continue to help young athletes succeed in their academics.  BigSun is offering their annual scholarship to a deserving student.  All student athletes are eligible to apply.  Students can go online at www.bigsunathletics.com to apply.
